Vordur - the name and the images
Top  Previous  Next

Vordur is a word taken from Icelandic. The Icelandic spelling is Vörður which means a guard, keeper, protector, watcher, etc. The Vordur software protects and guards the information about your software installs.

The picture that we have chosen to use in Vordur to represent the guard is an image of Leifur Eiriksson who was the first European to discover America in the early 11th century.

The statue in the picture was given by the United States to the people of Iceland in 1930 on the thousand year anniversary of the Icelandic parliament, Althing. It stands tall in front of the Hallgrimskirkja cathedral in central Reykjavik.

The background on the top of the About window is a tiled image that was cut out of a picture taken on Christmas Day 2004 in Port Lavaca in Texas.

In Icelandic, Vörður is also the plural of Varða, which means a cairn - a mound of rocks used as landmarks or as a memorial.
